Joseph GoebbelsJoseph Goebbels was Adolf Hitler's right-hand man to the very end. When Hitler became chancellor in 1933, he named Goebbels to be minister of propaganda for the Nazi German government. Goebbels promoted anti-Semitism and forced Jewish artists, scholars, writers and others to become unemployed. He also helped organize a night of violence against Jews that became known as "Kristallnacht," or the "Night of Broken Glass," on Nov. 9, 1938.

Heinrich MüllerJust before midnight on November 9, Gestapo chief Heinrich Müller sent a telegram to all police units informing them that “in shortest order, actions against Jews and especially their synagogues will take place in all of Germany. These are not to be interfered with.” Rather, the police were to arrest the victims.
